Our name

Why “Free State.”

Lawrence was founded in 1854 by settlers who came west to make Kansas a free state, and it rebuilt in limestone after it burned. The owner’s family came to Lawrence in those territorial years as Free Staters. The name is on the door because it’s in the family tree.
